CEE 4534 : EARTH PRESSURES AND FOUNDATION STRUCTURES
Course Description :
Earth pressure theories and their applications to the design of retaining structures, anchors, and excavation bracing. Bearing capacity and settlement of shallow foundations. Types and capacity of deep foundations.
Specific Course Objectives :
Write clear memos.
Estimate soil property values from information such as boring logs, soil descriptions, and laboratory test results.
Calculate total and effective stresses acting vertically and horizontally on retaining walls and other earth supported structures for at-rest, active, and passive conditions.
Design retaining walls based on considerations of stability against sliding, safety against bearing capacity failure, and stability against overturning.
Determine allowable bearing pressures for spread footings.
Estimate settlements of spread footings on sandy and clayey soils.
Describe general load transfer mechanisms for pile and drilled shaft foundations.
