"In the Dark": Archival research and data analysis in the Curtis Flowers case
(Seminar/Conference)

Dear Colleagues --

I'd like to invite you to the first event of the History Department's speaker series on the theme Digital/Inequality, co-organized by Rachel Midura and LaDale Winling. We're pleased to host, via Zoom, two reporters from American Public Media: Will Craft and Parker Yesko, on Thursday, October 7th, at 4pm.

Craft and Yesko worked on the data investigation for the Curtis Flowers case as part of Season 2 of the In The Dark podcast from APM. This effort explored problems in the case against Flowers, a man who was tried and convicted, with convictions overturned, six times for a multiple homicide in Winona, Mississippi. Their efforts contributed to the release of Flowers after more than 20 years of incarceration, and won a Polk Award for journalism, the first podcast ever to be so honored.

In the Dark Season 2

Craft and Yesko will discuss the case and reporting, the team's archival work in warehouses excavating the jury selection record of the prosecutor, and the process of data analysis. The lawyers of Curtis Flowers drew on this work for their successful appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.
