Edward Gitre "Crowdsourcing Our Collective Cultural Heritage: The American Soldier in World War II at the Intersection of Artificial & Human Intelligence"
(Research)

Center for Humanities Director Sylvester Johnson and Assistant Professor of History Ed Gitre will be discussing humanities-focused crowdsourcing, pedagogy and digital literacy, and cultural heritage for the digital age. Dr. Gitre is director of The American Soldier in World War II, an NEH-funded, VT-based interdisciplinary initiative that is harnessing the power of "the crowd" and artificial intelligence to provide access to unique historical collection - 65,000 pages of uncensored reflections on war and military service from American soldiers, in their own words.

The project began as a digital humanities classroom experiment in 2015. Hosted on the planet's largest crowdsourcing platform, Zooniverse.org, The American Soldier in World War II has since then attracted thousands of other "citizen archivist" volunteers from around the globe, breaking down the wall between classroom and public square.

Please join the Center for Humanities for this engaging talk with Dr. Edward Gitre. There will be a brief Q and A with viewers following the presentation. Registration is required.
