Symposium on Mass Incarceration, Communities and Families (Virtual Seminar/Confrence)

Join the Department of Human Development and Family Science (HDFS) at Virginia Tech on Friday, April 16, 2021, from 8:30am to 4:30 pm virtually to learn how mass incarceration impacts families and communities. The symposium is a dynamic forum to address criminal justice reform and dives deep into the challenges experienced by families and communities living with the collateral consequences of imprisonment. Panelists consist of community leaders, social justice activists, justice involved persons and family members, and scholars from the Virginia Tech community as well as other Virginia universities.
The symposium will be a high-energy day full of rich discussion and collaboration. Please join us in the spirit of community, translational scholarship, and service.

Keynote Speaker
Ms. Kemba Smith. Ms. Smith is a formerly incarcerated person who was pardoned by President Clinton and founded the Kemba Smith Foundation. The work of the foundation is centered on community education and advocacy around incarceration and reentry, public health (e.g. drug abuse, domestic violence), and providing resources and counseling for families of the incarcerated.
Policy Facilitator
Dr. Larry Terry. Dr. Terry is the director of the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service at UVA and Lecturer of Public Policy. He is a leader in community engagement and currently works with state legislators on identifying best practices and strategies for criminal justice reform.
