"Words of the Prophets: Graffiti as Political Protest in Greece, Italy, and Poland"

The MA Program in English is honored to announce an upcoming talk by scholar, Jonathan Gross (DePaul University."Words of the Prophets" explores graffiti in Poland,Italy, Greece and the United States. In a close reading of an alleyway near the Solidarity museum in Gdansk, garbage trucks in Naples and murals honoring Dante and Shakespeare in Florence, graffiti in Athens during the debt crisis, as well as a mural honoring Mic One in Chicago, I argue that citizens ignore graffiti at their own peril. Historically, graffiti, like hip hop music, predicts and demonstrates unrest and anguish.
Jonathan Gross is a Professor at DePaul University where he teaches courses in English Romanticism, 19th Century Literature, and World Literature. In 2018, he published a jazz album on piano called "Profiles of Aphrodite." Gross's current work continues to explore the importance of graffiti in our cultural environment and the work of Lord Byron.
This interdisciplinary talk combines elements of literary studies and cultural studies and intersects with various critical fields. It should be of interest to scholars in a wide range of fields including English, History, Music, Art, Art History, Film, International Studies, Economics, Political Science, Sociology, Africana Studies, and more.
