Lecture on Syrian Refugees in Germany by Dr. Volk
(Academic)

Between 2015 and 2018, approximately 1.5 million refugees seeking temporary protection arrived in Germany. The largest group among them were Syrian refugees fleeing an increasingly brutal civil war. initially represented in the media as innocent victims who deserved Germany's help - with an acceptance rates of asylum petitions of nearly 90% -- refugees began to be represented as threats to the fabric of German society in 2016. Missing in public refugee debates were refugee votes themselves. Dr. Volk will address these narratives and their implications in her lecture.
