Narrative & Nostalgia: The Crusades & American Civil War Conference
(Seminar/Conference)

Michel-Rolph Trouillot closed his 1995 book "Silencing the Past" by reminding us that "history doesn't belong only to its narrators... While some of us debate what history is or was, others take it in their own hands." This is nowhere more true than in 2 historical periods seldom in conversation - the 12th-century Crusades & the 19th-century US Civil War. Scholars across disciplines seek to clarify these periods amongst themselves, while popular audiences consume these retellings, while others "take it in their own hands" by toppling monuments or evoking these periods as direct explanations for their own identities.

To spur further conversation, we are hosting a 2 day plenary conference on March 29-30, 2019.

Matthew X. Vernon, assistant professor of English at UC-Davis, will be our keynote speaker.
