Between Indios and Indigenistas: Disseminating Lettered Practices in the Andes
(Academic)
Dr. Jorge Coronado: "Between Indios and Indigenistas: Disseminating Lettered Practices in the Andes"
The presentation discusses intellectuals' dissemination of lettered practices among indigenous peoples in the Andes in the early 20th century. In particular, it offers historical examples of the variety of ways in which such lettered practices were received and, in many cases, tergiversated. It scrutinizes literary indigenismo, the primary cultural movement of the time, in order to rethink critical and theoretical assumptions about the relationship of literacy to orality in Latin America.
Refreshments will be provided.
