- Admin Tool to Shut Down Jan 19, 2023
On October 31, 2022 - the Middleware Department made an update to the way VT services authenticate with LDAP. This is a necessary update in order to keep the university up to date with security standards. That update essentially broke this admin tool that is used to log into your site to maintain content. We worked with them to pinpoint that the issue was because of the old software that will not be updated in this old legacy environment. This admin tool and this legacy service will become obsolete as technology continues to advance.
We were able to buy some time with the discovery of this issue, and the Middleware Department has been gracious enough to restore the ldap settings and give us an extension for our users. They have given us until Jan 19, 2023 to get all users away from using the old method of LDAP. On Jan 19th, this page will no longer work and you will no longer be able to log into your site to edit or update your content. At that point, the only way to access your code for updates will be by using the DAV service. You have until Jan 19 to make arrangements. You need to either transition your site out of this old legacy hosting environment, or be able to make edits using DAV.
- Hosting Transition
The main purpose of the Hosting Service is to provide a secure environment for VT departments to maintain a web presence. It is our goal to provide this security, while also implementing the most efficient methods available, according to the standards of today. This old hosting environment is no longer being updated, and will no longer meet those standards. All sites will be transitioned out of this old legacy environment, and into our new AWS environment by end of year 2023.
For nearly four years, the Hosting Department has been transitioning sites out of this old legacy environment and onto our new servers at AWS. We have succussfully transitioned 90% of VT Hosting sites over to our s4 html service, and WordPress as a service. If you have a dynamic site that uses php and MySQL to render pages and content, then WHoS is our new cloud based php/mysql service that will be used to host your site.
Please put in a ticket using the Support Web App if you still have a site in this old environment and we will work with you to get it transitioned into the appropriate s4, WPaaS, or WHoS service area.
Thank you, The Web Hosting Team
