Hosting moving all sites to SSL
The main purpose of the Hosting Service is to provide a secure environment for VT departments to maintain a web presence. It is our responsibility to keep our servers secure, patched, and up to date with the most recent software.
VT is setting a standard that requires all sites to use https://. We took volunteers at the end of 2017 to migrate sites over to https:// in hosting. We have worked through the first couple batches, and we believe we have worked out all the kinks. This should now be an easy process, and migrations should be fairly simple.
I will be contacting site admins over the next couple months as we migrate all hosting sites to https:// . We did this on a volunteer basis originally, but now we have to start moving everyone over. I'll start with the A's, and work my way through. I'll contact the site admins and go from there.
If you would like to go ahead and get in on this process, please put in a ticket at https://webapps.es.vt.edu/support/ and I'll put you on the list. I'll work with you to get your certificates, and your configurations set up. It should be a simple move, unless you have hard coded links pointing to your site or to the old SSL server at https://secure.hosting.vt.edu. If that's the case, then you'll need to update your hard coded links.
Please join our google group for Web Hosting Announcements at https://groups.google.com/a/vt.edu/d/forum/hosting-announcements-g. We will use this page to keep you informed about maintenance, upgrades, and general information about our service.
Please put in a ticket using the Support Web App if you have any questions, or problems.
